Meaning of Hadith & Its Categories

Meaning of the word “Hadith”
Linguistically, “ḥadīth” (حديث) means: something new, a report, or a narration.
Technically, in the science of ḥadīth, it refers to: everything that is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ
of statements, actions, approvals, or descriptions (physical or character).
Categories of Hadith (by authenticity)
Ṣaḥīḥ (صحيح): A hadith with a continuous chain, upright and precise narrators, free from defects and contradictions.
Ḥasan (حسن): Similar to ṣaḥīḥ but with slightly lesser precision in some narrators.
Ḍa‘īf (ضعيف): A weak hadith where one or more conditions of ṣaḥīḥ/ḥasan are not met.
Mawḍū‘ (موضوع): Fabricated hadith falsely attributed to the Prophet ﷺ.
Categories of Hadith (by chain continuity)
Muttaṣil (متصل): Continuous chain with no missing narrators.
Munqaṭi‘ (منقطع): A break in the chain at any point.
Mu‘allaq (معلق): One or more narrators missing from the beginning of the chain.
Mursal (مرسل): A Tābi‘ī narrates directly from the Prophet ﷺ, skipping the Companion.

مصطلح الحديث – Terminology of Hadith
Isnād (الإسناد)
The chain of narrators that transmits the hadith from the Prophet ﷺ to the compiler.
Matn (المتن)
The actual text/content of the hadith – the words conveying the meaning.
Rāwī (الراوي)
The narrator who transmits the hadith.
Jarḥ wa Ta‘dīl (الجرح والتعديل)
The science of criticizing and accrediting narrators based on their reliability and precision.
Mutawātir & Āḥād
Mutawātir (متواتر): Narrated by so many chains that it is impossible they all agreed upon a lie.
Āḥād (آحاد): Narrated by a limited number of narrators; includes gharīb, ‘azīz, and mashhūr.
40 Hadith Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (r.a.)
أربعون حديثًا من رواية أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه
Below is the structure. A few examples are filled; continue adding until you reach 40 using the same pattern.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent…”
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah does not look at your forms or your bodies, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.”

Hadith Narrated by Aisha (r.a.)
أحاديث من رواية عائشة رضي الله عنها
Add as many hadith as you wish; here are a couple of examples.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever would like his provision to be increased and his life to be extended, let him maintain ties of kinship.”

40 Hadith Qudsi
أربعون حديثًا قدسيًا
Hadith Qudsi: words from Allah ﷻ conveyed by the Prophet ﷺ, but not part of the Qur’an.
“Allah does not show mercy to one who does not show mercy to people.”
